We, as gardeners of Sweden, believe that all aspects of cultural life should contribute to creating a world of human dignity, understanding and compassion. Gardening, like art, music and other pursuits, can help achieve these objectives.
We aim to create gardens that are not only beautiful and bountiful, but which encourage empathy between people of all communities, nations, races and cultures.
We therefore call on Swedish gardeners to use plant species and design schemes that symbolise or inform people about:
1.The suffering of others less fortunate than themselves
2.The importance of empathy, compassion and social cooperation.
In addition, the ideal empathy garden is:
1.Created with the help of other people, in a spirit of cooperation and mutual aid
2.Shared with other people, so that we can enjoy the fruits of each other's labour and have access to the land.
We believe that such gardens will stimulate and inspire actions beyond the garden to help other people in their lives, whether they be friends, family or strangers.
Gardening should have no borders. We believe in internationalism.
Empathy gardeners of the world unite!
